I was absolutely delighted to see my friend Bro. Mathieu G. Ravignat’s new book on the Elus Cohen published towards the end of last month. It is currently available on Amazon.

Bro. Mat does have the distinct advantage of living in Quebec and being bilingual, which means he can read ten books in French at the time it takes me to read one! No doubt this helps him review the enormous amount of written and manuscript material now available on the subject of Pasqually’s mysterious theurgical Masonic Order, the Masonic Elect Cohen Knights of the Universe.

Given the lack of true rituals available to us, Robert Ambelain undertook to recreate them to the best of his ability back in the late 1930s. However, he had access to far fewer documents than we now collectively possess, and much of his recreations had to rely on the magic of grimoires and Kabbalistic lore, resulting in a system which, while efficacious as many can attest, is simply not the real thing. Nevertheless, over the past 80 years nobody has come up with a better version.

Until now.

Drawing on the vast resources now available which hadn’t been uncovered in Ambelain’s time, Bro. Mat has set about recreating a series of powerful Elus Cohen Rituals for our time. He is the first to tell us that these are not the genuine article: nevertheless, what he has set on paper is assuredly the closest we can come to them, given our present knowledge.

I should add that, for the uninitiated, certain keys and formulae have been omitted which will make the exercise of reading the book one for the armchair rather than the oratory! However, for anyone who has been initiated into the Ambelain line and has access to key books and teachings, it should be easy enough to figure out the rituals.

If you are interested in perhaps the most accurate reconstruction to date of this extraordinary Order which persists in some form up to present times, this books comes highly recommended (including my Preface!).

    • Dear Fr. Charles-Raphael,

I speak French after a fashion, but I admit my long time spent living in the United States with no opportunity to practice means it normally takes me a couple of weeks to regain any fluency when visiting France! My strongest ability is in translating from French to English, since I have gained a strong understanding of French mysticism, Freemasonry and philosophy and understand many of their unique terms, but a conversation in French would be slow! I’m afraid I live just outside New York City, and I see you live in Canada, so it would probably be difficult to meet face to face. However, I may be in Toronto around 22 August, if that helps. IHN, piers
