Abbé Julio’s House Blessing Ritual
I have always been fascinated by Abbé Julio (1844 – 1912), that enigmatic French priest who, having been ordained as a Catholic priest, broke with Rome in 1885, eventually joining with Vilatte in the Independent Catholic movement. His books of prayers, combining traditional Catholicism with esoteric Talismans and Sacramentaries which predated Robert Ambelain’s famous ‘Sacramentaire de la Rose+Croix’, have fascinated students for over 100 years.
Since I am performing a House Blessing this weekend, and Julio’s work seemed appropriate, I’ve translated his ceremony from his Grands Secrets Merveilleux, and I have made it available here to an anglophone audience.
Note that I have slightly updated the wording to cover apartments and homes and removed references to outbuildings, which tend not to exist nowadays. Also note that any blessing ceremony for water and salt can be used. A simple blessing of a sword can be found on the internet. For the reason for using a sword in a House Blessing, see my forthcoming translation of Papus’ 1893 book Elementary Treatise on Practical Magic for a comprehensive explanation and examples.
Enjoy – and use!
Thank You, It reminded me of my Childhood when a priest used to come and bless a house or a new shop.
