Seeing as we’re at the Spring Equinox, here’s a simple alchemical elixir I make most years according to Cockren’s recipe:

THE GOLDEN WINE OF ARCHIBALD COCKREN.

This Alchemical recipe has been taken from the work of Archibald Cockren and is essentially a Solar Elixir. Also, this wine is a mystical wine that purifies the Body of Light, and causes serendipity to emerge in its use. This is a relatively simple Wine to make, but it takes up to three months to perfect it and it should not really be disturbed in the making.

The work must be begun in a time when there is no major opposition from the planets, and, the physical work should begin on a Sunday morning between three o clock in the morning and five o clock in the morning.

The time scales that the work can only be done in is between March 22nd, and the 22nd, of June. It finishes on July 22nd.

INGREDIENTS:
The ingredients are all Solar correspondences that comprise the salt, sulphur and mercury of this wine. They are:
– One ounce of Coffee beans that preferably are unroasted [this is what Cockren specified],
– One ounce of Sunflower seeds,
– One hand full of fresh Vine leaves,
– One half pint of fine Brandy.
– One Mason jar, or a jar that will give a complete lock so as to keep the spirit in the jar. This jar must be clear as it is the Sun that is the Artisan of this work and needs access to the bodies in the jar.

METHOD:
Take all the ingredients and place in the jar at the prescribed time, LEAVE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT FOR TWENTY FOUR HOURS PER DAY. The jar then must be left undisturbed right up to the 22 of JULY [not June].

During the period of the full Moon in June draw off the elixir, keep in a sterilized jar safe from contaminants, and taking the remaining solids place them in a pan and burn them with as hot a flame as possible here at this point using, for example, a chef’s blowtorch.

Burn this Dead Head until it becomes as grey as possible. While burning it will be of benefit occasionally to regrind the Feces as finely as possible. Having calcined the Dead Head, add it back to the elixir and then leave this mixture to mature for another two weeks or up to the 22 of July, or whichever is longer.

On the 22nd of July remove the calcined salts from the elixir and take one teaspoonful in water or neat as preferred. Avoid any recreational use of alkaloids in this period. A light diet is required as an aid for the first three weeks of usage.

      Hi piers, I live in South Australia.
      I’ve been making solar elixir for a number of years now.
      I live in the southern hemisphere. So it’s not 24 hrs of sunlight. As the recipe suggests.
      Where was the solar elixir originally made by Archibald Cochran ?
      How many millilitres is a half pint ? As it differs around the world.
      Do you grind the ingredients before putting out in the sun ?
      How do you filter the solids out before burning the dead head ?
      Any specific filtering method ? As there is alot of oil in the mixture that could be filtered out if done incorrectly.
      Any information would be helpful to perfect this recipe.

        Archibald Cochran, 9th Earl of Dundonald (1749 – 1831) would have lived in Scotland, so wet and relatively cold! That also means the pint is UK not US (i.e. 20oz. not 16oz.) so a 1/2 pint would be near enough to 300ml.

        Personally I didn’t grind up the ingredients, since I beleive they should be left in their natural state under solar rays for the fermentation part. That includes the coffee which should be whole beans (make sure you get guaranteed organic to avoid any possibility of chemical additions). I grind the ingredients immediately prior to putting them in an unbleached coffee filter and use that to separate the liquid from the lees. I agree this could be done far more efficiently using more ‘professional’ spagyric alchemical equipment, and far less oil, etc. would be lost. However, the point of the experiment is that anyone can do it using common kitchen equipment, so the recipe I gave is to allow the most people to experience the steps involved with a simple spagyric experiment.
